CHERYL Cole winced in distress as fans got too close for comfort during the X Factor auditions in Birmingham yesterday.

The petite judge was swamped as over-eager devotees pushed and tussled to try and get a closer glimpse of the star.

And her bodyguards were clearly finding it difficult to shield her from one zealous fan who grabbed her wrist as she attempted to get an autograph.

The redhead looked flustered and close to tears as she thrust a copy of Cheryl's album in her face in a bid for her to sign it.

Cheryl, 26, had just joined regular judges Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Natalie Imbruglia - the latest star to fill-in for Dannii Minogue during her maternity leave - for the second round of auditions in the West Midlands.

But as Cheryl finally emerged from the scuffle, she still appeared shaken by the clash despite barely having a hair out of place.

The singer had gone for classy grey jeans and fitted tuxedo-style top combo while Aussie Natalie dazzled in a short pink dress.

Can't understand why the fans need to get so close to her. Don't forget she as been threatened. This would have been very frightening for her. Why can't the fans be a bit more concerned about her rather than being like a stampede having to get close to her and touch her. They want to learn how to act when they want to see someone well known. She likes the public but not when they crowd round her it makes her nervous. Can't say I blame her for being like that.
