STRICKEN CHERYL TWEEDY caught malaria on a trip to Tanzania with her dancer friend DEREK HOUGH.

The exhausted X Factor judge briefly visited Africa's East coast with 25-year-old Derek in a bid to recharge her batteries three weeks ago.

She had taken malaria tablets - but they failed to protect her from the mosquito-borne illness, which in extreme cases can KILL.

The Sun told yesterday how the 27-year-old Geordie dramatically collapsed with suspected gastroenteritis during a photoshoot for her album on Saturday afternoon.

She was ordered to rest, but began drifting in and out of consciousness on Sunday and was rushed to a Surrey hospital, where doctors diagnosed malaria.

Last night sources close to the star, who has worked relentlessly since splitting from England and Chelsea footballer hubby ASHLEY COLE, said she would be kept in hospital for another night and could remain under close observation for up to two weeks. Her involvement in the rest of this series of The X Factor is in serious doubt.

Sources also revealed Cheryl - whose spokesman confirmed she has malaria - had secretly battled painful stomach cramps while filming the ITV talent show. One said: "She told doctors she'd had stomach pains since her return from Tanzania. On Sunday evening her condition deteriorated so rapidly she knew it was something serious.

"She'd spent 48 hours in bed trying to sleep off what she thought was a stomach bug. She was extremely weak, sweating and drifting in and out of consciousness. She was driven to hospital where tests showed malaria. Everyone is really concerned. She is very ill."

X Factor mogul SIMON COWELL texted Cheryl after we revealed her collapse. He told her: "Have some rest. Don't rush back." One pal said: "He's concerned - she's such a workaholic."

Malaria is very easy to treat She will be ok and it doesn't recur unless you get anther bite from an infected mosquito. The children that die of malaria die because they don't access meical attention quick enough. It's amazing hw dull people are, yet here is internet. Bristolmuppet is one such daft contributors. Read about any disease on the Centre for Disease Control website and maybe you'll be smarter.

Poor kid hope you get well soon and take some advice stop working and get well let the others worry for a bit and get yourself well.

Unfortunately Malaria never leaves you but it can be controlled best of luck Cheryl.

Her Majesty Cheryl Tweedy is down. How can Britain sleep peacefully? Go and thrash Ashley. Media is anyway doing that as if Ashley is solely responsible for Cheryl Cole going down. Her hunger for fame and money resulted in such exhaustion as if she cared for Ashley.

who is the Virus? Ashley. That's what i get from the media reports.

Isn't this unprofessional on Cheryl?? She is getting millions for featuring in X factor but cant keep herself healthy during auditions. She is well aware of over working and exhaustion but still she wants to make more money before X factor starts.

I agree...i`m so SICK of reading about her and seeing her face splashed everywhere..that i`m starting to take Ashley`s side in all of what goes on between them!!...if the case is genuine..then i genuinely say get well soon..but lately going by the newspapers..her lot are capable of any story!!

I am with you on this one. The girl could have died and just because some people have seen enough of her they post vitrolic comments about her on here. I was one of the sceptics yesterday but how wrong can you be. I wish her a speedy recovery. Ashely - get round and see her now.

if all your gonna do is change your opinion everytime to suit the minority then go do it on the many Cheryl fan forums that are about.

she caught the bug? good for her, so did i and recovered within several weeks, the question is is her immune system strong enough to fight it off? the sun downplay the issue and say its possible it's one of the less nasty infections but an infection is an infection and like any infection it can kill if not properly diagnosed. maybe now she can choose between her life and her flagging pop career.
